WAPA Holds Safety Awareness Session for Women-Focused NGOs in Lagos

The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) yesterday hosted a one-day interpretive session on “Safety: Home and Public Place Safety” at the Women Development Centre, Agege, aimed at equipping women with practical knowledge on staying safe both at home and in public spaces.

The event was convened by Mrs. Itunu Babarinde, Director of the NGO Unit of the Ministry, and brought together a diverse audience of women-focused NGOs committed to grassroots advocacy and empowerment.

In her keynote address, the Honourable Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, emphasised the vital role women play in community safety and the need for sustained awareness on preventive measures. She noted that safety begins with information and that empowered women are better equipped to protect their homes and families.

Also present was the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Rainat Ajibike Onigbajo, who reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting educational initiatives that address safety and well-being, particularly among vulnerable groups.

The session featured an engaging presentation by Mrs. Oluwatosin Shogbola, Director of Safety, Training and Sensitisation at the Lagos State Safety Commission. She shared expert insights on fire prevention, emergency preparedness, personal security in public places, and child safety at home.

Participants comprising women leaders, NGO representatives, and community advocates applauded the initiative and called for regular sensitisation programs at the local government level to deepen impact.

The Ministry reaffirmed its resolve to continue partnering with civil society organisations to create a safer, more informed society for all.
